Welcome
to Elgin Elementary School! At EES, parents are considered
partners in their child's education and as such are invited to
share in many aspects of their child's learning. This website
allows parents the opportunity to access important educational
information. On this site there are links to the
Elgin
Independent School District website, the
Texas Education
Agency site and the
Region 13 Education Service Center site.
These sites provide parents with information regarding the
TAKS test, the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills),
and other basic information regarding policies and operating
information. From time to time this site will be updated with
links connecting the parent to grade level information, PTO
information, library news and school events. |

Sight Word Project:
A Step for Success at EES!

The most
commonly used words follow few spelling or pronunciation rules
and can cause great difficulty for children when they are
beginning to read. Mastery of sight words – truly learning to
know the most commonly used words “by sight” – allows readers to
focus on the more important “content” words and the message
contained in the story being read. Reading is more interesting
and much more fun when the basics are in place!
Students
in grades 1, 2 and 3 at Elgin Elementary School will be
undertaking a “Sight Word Project” to build the foundation for
rewarding reading experiences. Working from “Fry’s Instant
Words” – a list of 100 words at each grade level – students will
be challenged to master words 10 at a time. An initial
assessment will be given by Mr. Reyes and Mr. Tharp. The
principals will work through the list to find 10 target words
for each child. Those words will then be sent home on flash
cards for practice, practice, practice. J Each time a set is
mastered, a new set of 10 will be given. This will continue –
with celebrations along the way – until every child has an
excellent working knowledge of the sight words for their grade
level (and possibly beyond!).
Be on the lookout for a ring
of words coming home with your child and be ready to have fun
with this ~ look for words in books, on posters, on signs, at
the grocery store, etc…. You can make an extra set of the words
and play “Memory” – looking for (and reading) words that match.
Alphabet cereal or pasta makes learning new words fun too!
Practice at the breakfast table or before bedtime, but always
keep the practice quick and fun. We recommend mixing up the
word order each time you practice to help build true “sight”
recognition. Our goal is that EVERY child know EVERY word on
their list – not for the day, but for a lifetime of reading!
